Two new AHWeather IconSets available in Google Play Store

Two new IconSets for AmberHome Weather are available in Google PlayStore.

Plain Light from MerlinTheRed at DeviantArt. A really nice IconSet completely in grey. Download it here from Google PlayStore or search it directly in the app in the IconSet settings screen.

Second is the Plain Colored IconSet from MerlinTheRed at DeviantArt, too. Similar to the Plain Light IconSet but with more colors. Download it here from Google PlayStore or search for it directly in the app in the IconSet settings screen.

I think these are two very nice IconSets.

Many thanks to MerlinTheRed for his permission.

AmberHome Weather app is working again!

It seems that the guys at yr.no site fixed the problem with the xml weather feed.

AmberHome Weather app is working again.

Sorry for the confusion.

YR.NO weather feed currently down!

The yr.no weather feed is currently down because of technical problems and so the AmberHome Weather app does not work, too. I don't know any more than the message they have on their home page: We are experiencing technical difficulties on yr.no right now. Please try again in a few minutes. Sorry!

I hope they will fix it soon.

I'm very sorry about this.

AmberHome Weather Version 2.3.2 in Google Play Store

AmberHome Weather V2.3.2 is released in Google Play Store. This new version has some general changes.

First of all, I have removed the slide menu and changed it to a simple overflow menu. I think this is more compliant to the Android Holo theme. Another thing is that the targetSdkVersion is now 14 which changes several things for the app. The widget gets a border around it to fit the size with other standard Google widgets and hardware acceleration is enabled which makes scrolling and page flipping amazingly smooth in the app. Some other minor design changes were made to better fit the Holo style.

Unfortunately I decided to remove the blue theme. I will concentrate more on the Holo look and feel.

Main reason for releasing this version was a bug in the yr.no XML weather feed data. Sometimes the symbol/icon is missing from the data for the 6 hour interval. This let the app display a questionmark in the widget and in the app for certain times. This is fixed in this version. Additionally after 6 pm the night icon is shown in the widget and the 10 day forecast preview.

A nice new feature is the direct access to the hourly/3-hour forecast by tapping on the current condition or one of the 6 hour entries on the "Weather today" view.

Currently I'm working on automatic location updates and some new widget layouts.

Hope you like the update.

Preview of my current work...

Sorry, long time no updates on this blog. I was busy writing some libraries for Basic4Android which are now highly used on the weather app.

There is no new beta version available since it has currently too many bugs. But I will show some preview images here. Comments welcome.

Weather app v0.2 alpha available

I just released Version 0.2 Alpha of my weather app for Android.

Changes:

  • German translation (very few strings are still missing)
  • Better handling of widget service and download of weather data
  • Many force closes fixed (I hope I found them all)
  • Many small improvements
Initializing the user interface is still very slow at the moment. I hope to improve this in the next version.

I think this version is much more stable than the first alpha but be aware that this still is alpha. Now I will start again implementing new features like some global settings (°C, °F etc), update interval for the widget, hourly forecast (though I think the hourly weather data is not very good from the data source I use).

Feel free to add a comment if you find some bugs or just want to tell how you like the app.

First alpha version of weather App available

The last few weeks I was busy to develop my first Android App. It is a weather app which uses the same feed as the good old Marsware WeatherPanel for Windows Mobile.

I think WeatherPanel was the best weather program available on the Windows Mobile platform and I was really disappointed about all the available Android weather apps after switching over to the Android system.

My weather app will not be as good as WeatherPanel but it uses the same weather feed. Even the UI is somehow borrowed from the good old PhatPhinger IV WeatherPanel theme created by Storyr (thanks for your permission to use the graphics).

Be aware that this is currently an alpha version. This means it will have many bugs and many missing features. The weather feed it uses delivers some more data which will be integrated step by step into the user interface. Even more homescreen widgets with different layouts will be added in the future. The first step is to get the App stable and reliable. Then I will add new features.

Ok, here are the features for now:

  • Homescreen widget with current weather condition and 4 or 5 day forecast
  • App with current condition, and 10 day forecast
  • Multiple cities can be configured (though only one will be displayed in all widgets)
  • The app currently works in portrait mode only, the widget can be used in landscape, too
  • Currently fixed update rate of 30 minutes for current condition and one hour for forecast data. Only the widget city will be updated automatically.

Download the APK here.

Write your suggestions and feature requests in the comments.

Thanks very much for testing.
